What is a Merchant Account and How Can It Help You?

If you're new selling products on a web site or you have a small storefront somewhere, you may not have a merchant account yet. But perhaps it's time to consider obtaining one. There are many benefits that one of these accounts can provide you and your business. Basically, one of these accounts allows you to process credit cards for your customers. If you've only been taking other methods of payment such as cash, checks or money orders, one of these accounts can open you up to a whole new client base. Many people these days like to pay with cards like Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. If you can't take these cards, you are likely to lose quite a few customers.

Obtaining a credit card processing account is fairly straightforward and simple. The first thing you need to do is a little research. There are so many different online account providers out there that a little homework is in order if you want to locate the one with the best rates. The lower the rates are, the more money goes in your pocket. Rates vary from company to company, but are usually only a small percent of the transaction price or a few cents per transaction.

The application process to get an online credit card processing account is pretty easy. You will need to provide your personal information such as your name, address, phone number and email account. You will also need to provide information about your business. Normally, the company will run a credit check to make sure your credit is reasonably decent and your business is legitimate. Approval time varies from company to company, but usually doesn't take very long. Some companies even offer bonuses for new customers like free set-up and software.

There are many merchant account options available to you for online businesses as well as small brick-and-mortar businesses. If your business is strictly online, the transactions will be conducted strictly online. However, for businesses where you accept payments face to face, you will often receive a credit card processing machine. Many of today's credit card processing machines are wireless to allow for easy travel. This means you can accept credit cards from your customers wherever you go. Whether you do business online or at a physical location, the ability to process credit cards can take your business to the next level!
