Obtaining a Small Business Merchant Account
![]() |
There was once a time when the average small business could not accept credit cards. The ones that could were few and far between. Accepting credit cards was something for larger businesses. Things have changed dramatically since then. Thanks to today's credit card processing companies, anyone can accept credit cards, debit cards and even electronic checks. All you need is a small business merchant account.
Some traditional small business owners don't think they need one of these merchant accounts. They feel that the way they've always done things is fine. However, they'd be wrong. Many people in today's society pay for things with credit cards, debit cards, and checks. People don't want to keep a lot of cash on hand. If you're not accepting these forms of payment, you're likely losing business. Let's look at an example. Imagine two vendors who have set up identical shops side by side. One of them accepts credit cards, one of them doesn't. Who do you think will get the most business? The one who accepts more payment types, of course! Ready to get started? It's easy to get your own merchant account.
First, you'll need to choose a merchant account provider. This can be achieved by getting online and performing a search engine query. You'll immediately notice there are lots of providers out there. Take some time and narrow the field down to a few top choices. After that, you can check into the providers more extensively. Choose a provider who is legitimate, affordable and has a good customer service department. Luckily, there are lots of them out there.
Applying for your small business merchant account is as simple as filling out an online form. A good provider will normally check credit and review all information before approving or denying someone for a merchant account. Once you're approved, you're ready to start taking credit cards from your customers. How you will take them depends on the type of business you have. If you have an online business, everything will be handled via Internet. If you work at a physical location, you will need a credit card processing machine. Some providers even offer telephone credit card processing services. It's never been easier to give your customers lots of payment options than it is today -- thanks to merchant accounts!
