Avoiding Merchant Account Scams
![]() |
Any business owner who plans to succeed will need a merchant account so they can accept credit cards. They might also want to accept debit cards and electronic checks. To do this, a merchant account is necessary. There are lots of merchant account providers out there for business owners to choose from. No matter whether you have a small business or a large one, you can find a provider. There are providers who specialize in ecommerce, and those that work with brick and mortar businesses. There are even providers who specialize in high risk businesses. However, there are also merchant account scams out there in record numbers.
Scams and cons unfortunate side effects of the business world, especially on the Internet. However, you don't have to become a victim. If you know how to spot a scam or dishonest company, you can protect yourself and even help others avoid getting taken. Most of the time, a scam regarding merchant accounts will come in the form of hidden fees. At first, the merchant account provider will seem too good to be true. They might lure customers in with amazing promises. Red flags include things like no sponsoring bank, immediate activation, lowest fees, or even the promise of a free merchant account. Also, a scam company will likely not have a customer service phone number. Some might, but most won't bother with this.
How it works is simple -- these companies lure customers in with these false promises, then start charging them hidden fees or bogus charges that were not disclosed previously. This can be extremely expensive for your business, and difficult to get out of if you've signed a contract of any kind. Now that you know what to look for, you can avoid questionable companies. But what do you do if you're not sure whether or not a company is legitimate or not? The first thing you should do is check with the Better Business Bureau. Then, contact the company and ask them any questions that you have. This will help you determine whether or not they're a good choice or not.
Avoiding merchant account scams is easy. Simply avoid companies who seem too good to be true or make promises that seem impossible. For providers you're considering, inquire regarding the company's status with the BBB, and always contact their customer service department. Precautions such as these can ensure you find a legitimate merchant account provider and avoid getting scammed.
