Merchant Account Rates -- What to Expect
![]() |
Business owners these days need a way to process and accept credit card, debit card and electronic check payments. A merchant account gives them a way. With a merchant account, your business can offer the immediate processing of these payment types. There are merchant accounts for online businesses, catalog businesses, and brick and mortar businesses. Merchant account rates are going to vary from company to company, but there are some similarities that you're likely to run into on your search for a provider.
One is the per-transaction fee. Most every merchant account provider, and even third party credit card processors, are going to charge this type of fee. Normally, it equals a small percentage of the sale price plus a few cents. An example might be 2% per transaction plus 20 cents. This is, of course, an example. The actual costs are going to depend on the company you choose and the services you sign up for. Costs might also vary depending on the amount of each transaction.
Some companies will also charge other fees such as a set-up fee and/or monthly service charge. These fees can range dramatically depending on the provider. Many new or small businesses end up choosing providers that do not offer set-up fees or service charges. When searching for a merchant account provider, it's absolutely crucial to your best interests to do some research on the companies you are considering. Read all the fine print and contact the company's customer service department with any questions you may have. The last thing you want is to commit yourself to a merchant account provider who charges hidden fees.
The right merchant account provider will be happy to disclose all fees and charges to potential customers. Always check the standing of any provider you're considering with the Better Business Bureau to make sure there are no complaints from other customers. This can be done via toll-free number or even online at the BBB web site. Understanding exactly what you'll be paying for and how much you'll be paying can help you choose the best merchant account provider for your business. Once you have the ability to accept credit cards, debit cards and electronic checks, you can open your business up to a whole new set of customers!
