Most all merchant account providers charge a small per-transaction fee. Rates can range anywhere from approximately 1% of the transaction price to 3% or more. It all depends on the company, which is why comparison shopping is so important. Make sure you read all the fine print and understand all the fees and charges associated with an account.

Many merchant account providers offer related services in addition to their credit card processing services. These services might include fraud protection, shopping carts, or even online store creation and hosting. Different companies offer different services, so look around to find one that has the services you require at a cost you can afford.

The application process for ecommerce merchant accounts is reasonably simple. You will need to fill out an online form which covers aspects like personal and business information. Most merchant account providers will run a credit check to evaluate your level of risk. While the majority of business owners can find a company to approve them, some will need the services of an offshore merchant account provider. Whether you go the traditional route with a domestic provider or decide to go offshore, make sure to thoroughly research any company you're considering to make sure they're legitimate and are the best choice for your business.
